Critical Essay/ Presentation

Sara presented Bill Viola's The reflecting pool. First shot, airplane, still, white noise, meditation, keeps same space of frame the entire time. He is subtle, it's all about the details, three drops into the pool, barely noticeable, he fades and becomes one with nature, reflection of other people in water.
I observed, man walks from woods towards surface of pool. Climbs to the edge, his reflection is seen, stationary. Airplane noise in background for a long time. jumps and freezes in cannonball. The background trees are still but the water is still moving. It is clear they are two different videos connected. He begins to fade as his edges deteriorate. He makes a noise, the sound decreases, the water changes significantly. It becomes very still for a while, and then ripples and begins to show other things. Another ripple occurs. It continues to ripple, calm ripple. Another person appears in reflection of pool as his body deteriorates. A bubble is seen at the far right of the pool. More watery noises are heard. people interact upside down appearing to walk upside down along the pool's edge. water ripples backward, scenes intercut. Budy like figure in middle with no grounding. fades into pure light. pool gets very dark and all we see is light. Changes to lighter green again. man gets out of water naked. fades and walks back into woods without any clothes.
Light comes through the trees is softer. What is real? Is reflection real? Loud and annoying noise, rhythmic and soothing, reminds Sara of sound of silence, buzzing. Never truly silent. Three drops fall from feet? Symbolic of his emergence. He doesn't need to be in the water, he's already immersed in it. Foreshadowing of already being in the water.
Person to ambiguous. Resolution when he gets out of water. Rebirth from the water. Baptism. Confident. Walks off. Story comes full circle. Overlapping videos, played with opacities. Makes viewer question time. Actual time? Has it been years, hours, or reality.

Spike Lee, 25th Hour, Edward Norton, uses dialogue, quick transitions, camera angles, lighting effects, cool hand luke reference through poster. Architecture post 9-11. ground zero footage, musical scores,
Score voice of film
Love-hate relationships

Slow momentum, dramatic scores, Islamic voices

What is patriotism?
